Functional Skills Subject Lead

Salary: £37,000 – £40,000

Contract: Permanent (42 weeks per year – term time plus additional weeks, negotiable)

Hours: 35 hours per week (flexible for the right candidate)

Location: Stanwell Moor (near Heathrow)


This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward-thinking educational provision dedicated to supporting young people with additional learning needs. As Functional Skills Subject Lead, you will play a key role in overseeing the delivery and development of English, Maths, and Digital Functional Skills across the provision. You will ensure high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment, while supporting both learners and staff to achieve excellent outcomes.

This role combines leadership, coordination, and some teaching responsibilities, offering the chance to make a meaningful impact on learners’ progress and future opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Quality Assurance
  • Lead and oversee Functional Skills provision across all programmes
  • Ensure consistently high standards of teaching, learning, and assessment
  • Support and develop tutors through coaching, observations, and feedback
  • Embed Functional Skills across the wider curriculum
Assessment & Progress Monitoring
  • Oversee initial assessments and diagnostic processes
  • Monitor learner progress and maintain accurate records
  • Develop and implement individual learning plans with clear, outcome-focused targets
  • Contribute to progress reviews and reporting
Examinations & Compliance
  • Manage the full examination process, including scheduling and administration
  • Ensure all assessments meet awarding body and internal verification standards
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain robust processes
Teaching & Learning
  • Deliver targeted Functional Skills teaching where required
  • Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons
  • Support learners to achieve qualifications from entry level through to Level 2
Collaboration & Support
  • Work closely with curriculum leads and wider teams
  • Build positive relationships with learners and families
  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
About You

We are looking for an experienced and passionate educator who:
  • Has a strong background in delivering Functional Skills (English and Maths)
  • Has experience working with learners with additional needs
  • Demonstrates excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Is proactive, adaptable, and committed to high standards
  • Holds a Level 3 teaching qualification (or equivalent)
  • Has a solid understanding of assessment and examination processes
