Horizon Teachers are currently working with a well-established Secondary Pupil Referral Unit in Barking & Dagenham who are seeking a committed and resilient Behaviour Mentor to join their team, starting after May half-term, on a full-time basis.
This is a rewarding opportunity for someone passionate about making a real difference in the lives of young people who have been excluded from mainstream education due to social, emotional and behavioural needs.
About the Role -As a Behaviour Mentor, you will play a key role in supporting students aged 11–16 who present with challenging behaviour and additional needs. You will work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and external professionals to help pupils re-engage with learning, develop positive behaviour strategies, and build confidence both inside and outside the classroom.
This is a highly rewarding but demanding role, requiring consistency, patience, and strong behaviour management skills.
Key Responsibilities of a Behaviour Mentor -- Providing 1:1 and small group behaviour support to students.
- Implementing behaviour strategies in line with school policy.
- Supporting pupils to remain engaged in lessons and manage emotional regulation.
- Building positive, trusting relationships with young people.
- De-escalating challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner.
- Supporting reintegration into learning and promoting positive outcomes.
- Working collaboratively with teachers, SEN staff, and senior leadership.
Requirements -- Previous experience working with children or young people with challenging behaviour.
- Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- A resilient, proactive, and empathetic approach.
- A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people.
- Team Teach (or similar) qualification is desirable, but not essential.
