We can't quite believe it, but Christmas is nearly upon us, and with it, the smell of mince pies. The sounds of Christmas carols and, of course, lots of fun and festive events lined up at school. It's always fun to get into the Christmas spirit with your pupils, and whatever other festive treats you might have planned, decorating your classroom is something that everyone can get involved with and enjoy. If you are feeling a bit flummoxed about how to decorate your classroom with Christmas or just want to do something a little different this year, we've got a range of both traditional and more unique Christmas classroom decoration ideas to help you.
Christmas Classroom Decoration Ideas for Every Classroom!
Decorating the classroom for Christmas can be lots of fun and can also double up as a fantastic opportunity to teach your class about some of the beautiful traditions that take place both in the UK and worldwide at this time of year. Getting crafty in the classroom to make your space full of the magic of Christmas is something that all your pupils are bound to enjoy.
Here are some excellent Christmas classroom decoration ideas that don't need a lot of effort, planning, or resources but will look fun and effective when you put them up and get everyone into the holiday spirit.
Paper mache Christmas puddings
These Christmas puddings are a less sugary alternative to the real thing, and making them is gooey, messy, and lots of fun!
What you'll need:
- Flour
- Water
- Newspaper
- Balloons
- Paint
How to do it:
Blow up the balloon as large as you want your Christmas pudding to be. Next, create the paper mache paste. You do this by combining the flour and water until you get the right consistency. This should be a thick paste. Next, the newspaper must be cut into long strips and stacked in piles next to the paste. Get your pupils to dip the paper strips into the paste and stick these all over the balloons to layer them up and create a robust pudding-like shape. You'll need to leave the balloons to dry overnight, but once they are, you can paint your puddings and decorate them with real holly and berries for a beautifully rustic effect.
Festive lanterns
These lanterns are easy to make and can be used to decorate the classroom or could be something your pupils take home at the end of the day.
What you'll need:
- Clean jam jar (the bigger, the better)
- Tissue paper in festive colours such as red, green, and white
- PVA glue and water mixed to thin it out a little
- Wired tinsel garlands
- Battery-powered tea lights
How to do it:
Make sure the jam jars are clean and dry, and then ask your pupils to cut or rip the tissue paper into little strips. Pupils can choose just one colour or mix things up, creating patches or stripes of colour inside the jar. They should build up layers for the best effect. Let the jam jars dry, and then twist the wired tinsel around the rim of each one; you could even loop them over to create a sparkling handle for the children to hold. Once finished, place the tea light inside, and your lanterns are done.
Good old paper chains!
You can't go wrong with a festive paper chain, simple, traditional, and effective
What you'll need:
- Stiff card in different colours
- A stapler, sellotape, or glue
How to do it:
Cut your different coloured card into strips around 6-7 inches long. Create your first loop. Next, link subsequent loops by either stapling, sticking, or sellotaping them together. Carry on until you have a chain long enough to loop all the way around your classroom!
Christmas wreaths
This is a great activity that will get your classroom out into the fresh air.
What you'll need:
- Twigs, pine cones, holly, berries - whatever you can find!
- Gardening shears
- Carrier bags
- Wreath bases
- Ribbon
How to do it:
If you get a glorious winter's day and want to make the most of it, why not take your pupils out and try to gather some nature to create fun and festive Christmas wreaths? Alternatively, set this as an activity for them to do over the weekend and bring in their bags of pine cones, ivy, twigs, holly, berries, and leaves to decorate their wreaths on Monday.
Once you have enough material, give each child a wreath base and get them to weave their finds around it. Once they are finished, tie a ribbon around each one for hanging and create a wall of beautiful, natural Christmas wreaths around the classroom.
Glittery snowflakes
These are super simple Christmas decorations that look really effective, and can turn your classroom into a glittery winter wonderland!
What you'll need:
- White card - not too stiff
- Scissors
- PVA glue
- Paintbrushes (old)
- Lots of glitter
- Ribbon (optional)
How to do it:
Ask each pupil to take a piece of card and fold it several times to create a triangle shape before drawing a pattern to make their snowflake. The folds are a little tricky, so you can watch a video here explaining them, or, if you work with younger children, you could pre-fold the card at home, so all they have to do is create their pattern and cut it out.
Once your children have created their snowflakes, it's time to decorate them! Use paint brushes to apply a thin layer of glue to the snowflake and then shake glitter onto them. Leave them to dry before using ribbon or blu tac to adorn the walls!
